One player going through theDead Spaceremake noticed a small, but funny mistake regarding doomed CEC officer Chen. With a title that has been as critically andfinancially successful as EA Motive’sDead Space, it was only going to be a matter of time before players would catch on to some of the smaller details that are not supposed to be in the game.
Although the attention to detail in the USG Ishimura is one of the most laudable parts of the game, strange glitches and mistakes inDead Spacehave been found lurking in the derelict ship alongside the necromorphs roaming its halls. Thankfully most of them are pretty funny and do not take away from the overall adventure, with this latest discovery being no exception.

At the beginning ofDead Space, right after arriving at the Ishimura but before receiving a warm hug from a necromorph, Chen picks up a book to inspect it. At first, it seems like just another detail adding to the scene where Isaac’s crew are wondering where everyone had disappeared to, but upon taking a closer look, Reddit user Next_Yogurtcloset360 noticed that Chen was holding the book upside down and posted a screenshot from their game showing the oddity. The mistake is something many players are likely not to pick up on during their first time playing the game, but upon seeing it does inspire some to ask if it is a mistake or not.
Several users responded to the post with theories as to why Chen is holding the book upside down because, with a game with partsleft up to interpretation likeDead Space, it is certainly possible that Chen was meant to hold it that way all along. Funnier theories reason that Chen either cannot read or is so used to digital tablets that physical books are foreign to him, and another simply says that he enjoys manga, which is read from right to left. A more plausible theory is that he picked it up without regard for its orientation and just wanted to look at it.
Whether there is an explanation for Chen holding the book this way or not, it does not change the fact thatDead Spaceis a highly detailed remakewith callbacks to other parts of the franchise while still standing on its own as a terrifying adventure. As players continue to play the game, there is no doubt more details, intentional or not, will be unearthed, discussed, and sometimes laughed about.
Dead Spaceis available now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
