Call of Duty: Modern Warfareplayers have been pining for additional custom character class slots since the game’s release. Unfortunately, developers have made it known that, without proper testing, this sort of change can result in a lot of bugs. The game has already been subject to a number of bugs which have been a huge complaint for players. Some of these are minor things, while others completely halt progression like the infamousModern WarfareXP bug.Despite this, it looks like developers are still listening to players, as thanks to a recent response in the game’s Subreddit, fans have some hope for the future.
For those unaware,Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s art director, Joel Emslie, responded to a player’s Reddit thread asking for more custom character slots. In his response, Emslie explains that he believes the next update will include the much sought after feature, and that it has been something that the team has been working on for quite some time. These custom slots allow players to create personalized loadouts with which to enter battle, and despite previous games setting the precedent of having many slots and more unlockable through in game purchases or prestiging,Call of Duty: Modern Warfarelaunched with only five slots and with no way to expand that number.

InJoel Emslie’s response about custom character slots, he gives the reason for the game lacking this feature in the first place. According to Emslie, without proper testing, adding custom character slots can cause unexpected bugs and glitches. Given the numerous glitches players have already found, it makes sense that this wasn’t a priority. It is likely that developers were trying to hit deadlines and decided that this feature wasn’t worth the time it would take to minimize the negative effect on the game. Still, players are justified in expecting this feature, especially since it was prominent in almost every otherCall of Dutygame thus far.
Many players feel the need for additional classes because they approach different game modes with different strategies. With more than ten distinct game modes available, players don’t have the option to have a unique loadout for each mode, much less two or three load outs for each mode. Additionally, although players have the option to change classes in game and even customize custom classes during a match, the player runs the risk of beingkicked due to inactivityif they are not fast enough.
Regarding how these slots will be added into the game, there are a couple ways they could do it. Looking to the past, custom character class slots were often earned through the prestige system, in which players could start over after reaching maximum level/rank but with new benefits. Beyond that, Activision has been known to sell extra character class slots as microtransactions within the game, but given the problems and numerousCall of Duty: Modern Warfareexploits and glitchesplayers have dealt with, it would likely be safer to simply add these slots in an update or work them into the player’s rank progression.
Now that developers have time and aren’t racing against a release deadline, they have no excuse not to add this feature for players. While it is understandable that other, more pressing glitches and bugs which are ruining theCall of Dutymultiplayer experiencefor many players take precedence, it is nice to see that developers are not forgetting about the other things that players are asking for. It is very likely that this feature will roll out with the next update, although Joel Emslie did say that he was not certain of this, so players will just have to wait and see. At the very worst, the problem is being worked on.
