Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2offers some of the most robust customization ever seen in franchise history. Of course, the biggest area of customization inModern Warfare 2can be found in itsGunsmith 2.0 feature, a natural progression of the series' weapon customization system that allows for even more freedom than ever, letting players swap out countless attachments and even fine-tune them to ensure that they behave exactly how the player wants them to.
But one ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s more interesting customization systems is its Operator system. Unlike the vast majority of its predecessors,Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2allows players to actively choose their in-game avatar, which is used throughout the game’s online multiplayer modes. While a lot of these Operators are fairly generic armored soldiers, a good handful have a more unique identity, with some even coming from the game’s campaign mode. And there’s one iconicModern Warfarecharacter that would kill two birds with one stone if they were added as an Operator: Vladimir Makarov.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Should Introduce Makarov as an Operator
There’s currently a whopping total of40 playable Operators inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. When players start upModern Warfare 2for the first time, they’ll likely only have access to a handful of Operators, but they can unlock a few more by completing certain in-game objectives such as getting a kill with a secondary weapon or getting two revenge kills in a single match. However, the majority of these skins can only be unlocked by either buying the Season’s Battle Pass or by purchasing a specific skin in a bundle.
Over the last few months,Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2has added a slew of Operator skins based on the game’s most iconic campaign characters. Characters like Ghost, Soap, and Price were all available as Operators back whenModern Warfare 2launched, and a handful more have been added over time. Gaz came toModern Warfare 2in its first Season, and both Vargas and Valeria have been added withModern Warfare 2’s latest Season update, both appearing within its Battle Pass.
But there’s one iconicCall of Dutycampaign character that’s yet to be added toModern Warfare 2as a playable Operator, and that’s Makarov. A character first introduced in the originalModern Warfare 2, Makarov is the leader of the main antagonistic force in the originalModern Warfaretrilogy, the Russian Ultranationalists. Though Makarov hasn’t been seen in theModern Warfarereboot series just yet, his debut is teased right at the end ofModern Warfare 2’s campaign, where a mysterious figure known as “M” initiates a terrorist action on a plane by texting his conspirators the phrase “No Russian,” an obvious callback to the infamously controversial mission inModern Warfare 2where Makarov is first revealed.
It’s clear that Makarov will play a large role in whatever’s next fortheModern Warfareseries, and there’s no better time to reveal his design than right now. By introducing Makarov through a playable Operator, Infinity Ward not only manages to build hype for his upcoming debut in the next entry, but also manages to make a little money while doing so, killing two birds with one stone. And if the current rumors are true, andCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2ends up getting some kind of campaign DLC or sequel this year, then a playable Makarov is the perfect way to announce it.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
