Last week, aBorderlands 3update increased the potency of several bonuses granted by the Operative, Gunner, and Beastmaster Anointments, and indeed these buffs were met with a great deal of applause from many fans. Now, it seems that Gearbox Software is looking to keep this positive community response going, as it is following up theBL3January 16 updatewith a new hotfix that will increase the effects of yet another Anointment bonus.
Specifically, theBorderlands 3January 23, 2020 update, which will go live before 3pm PST, will significantly boost the bonus radiation damage granted by FL4K’s Gamma Burst Anointment. Up to this point, the Gamma Burst Anointment has provided a 65% radiation damage bonus when that Action Skill is active, and this will increase to 115% in today’sBL3update. Exactly how much this buff will improve Gamma Burst FL4K overall remains to be seen, but it is something that some fans will definitely want to test.

This is not all that players will find in theBorderlands 3January 23 hotfix, though, as the Proving Grounds' rewards will also be improved in this forthcoming update. Gearbox indicates that the chests in thisBL3endgame activityhave not been rewarding players at a level that it finds satisfactory, and these chests will thus “be more rewarding at all tiers of completion” following the patch.
Additionally, theBL3January 23 update addresses a handful of “perceived progression blockers,” which are outlined below in the full patch notes, and updates a texture for Incendiary Badass and Super Badass Varkids. While these changes are not as significant as the others found in today’s patch, some fans may wonder if the adjustment to Varkid textures could have something to do with the long-rumoredBorderlands 3Varkid raid boss, and that is something that many players would certainly be excited about.
That said, the existence of such a raid boss is purely speculative at this time, as Gearbox has yet to provide any official word on the matter. However, some fans expect that an imminentBorderlandsShow will reveal theBL32020 roadmap, and perhaps that content calendar will finally confirm that a giant insectoid boss is indeed on the way.
BORDERLANDS 3 HOTFIXES: August 06, 2025

With more players running the Proving Grounds for dedicated loot drops from the bosses, we noticed the chests not rewarding players as much as we intended. We’ve boosted these chests to reflect the effort players must take to complete the objectives. Completing all of the objectives gives the best Legendary drop rate and scales down accordingly.
We’re happy to see the response to the boosted Anointment bonuses we released last week. After additional testing, we want to also boost the effects of Gamma Burst anointments for FL4K.
