A passionateBloodbornefan showed off their custom music box which plays a memorable song from one of the last bosses in the game. Monumental boss battles are a staple of the Soulsborne games, andBloodborneis no exception.
Bloodborneplayers will fight one of three final bosses, depending on which ending they get. The first of these bosses,Mergo’s Wet Nurse, is the only boss that is required to fight regardless of which ending one gets. A notable change this boss makes compared to others is that rather than a typical grand orchestral soundtrack, this boss battle is accompanied by an ominous lullaby that sounds like it is being played off a music box. The song is titled “Lullaby for Mergo” in the game’s soundtrack and is known among fans for being one of the most hauntingly simple tracks heard in the game.

An abridged version of this tune can be heard in earlier portions of the game, specifically when a player uses the Tiny Music Box item that can be acquired before fighting the bossFather Gascoigne. This music box itself plays into a famously tragic quest that players can start by speaking to the daughter of Father Gascoigne early on in the game. Needless to say, music boxes carry a great deal of meaning in the lore ofBloodborne. This inspired a fan of the game to have a custom wooden music box made that plays the Lullaby for Mergo.
The box is engraved with the phrase, “Fear the Old Blood,” an adage used by characters in the game that references the dangers of blood ministration, a key element ofBloodborne’s story. The owner of the box, who goes by sickmojo on Reddit, said that after wanting one for years, they purchased it from a company called Only One Music Box for roughly $150. In response to another user who noted that the song played wasn’t quite one-to-one with what is heard in the game, sickmojo explained that the nature of mechanical music boxes means that the song had to be slightly slowed down and pitched lower. This did not keep the song from being instantly recognizable for those familiar with the boss fight against Mergo’s Wet Nurse.
For a game released over seven years ago,Bloodbornehas one of the most consistently active fanbases around today. Even with there being virtually no news on a follow-up to the game, fans new and old are still active enough online to periodically makeBloodbornetrend on Twitter. These players are the ones keepingBloodbornealive as a franchise, and Sony is missing out tremendously by not doing more with the property. A true follow-up toBloodbornewould do wonders to boost Sony’s catalog of exclusives and would unquestionably set the gaming community ablaze with excitement. Until that day comes, there will still be plenty to see fromBloodbornefans.
