Yuno Grinberryall is Asta’s aloof rival inBlack Clover. However, Yuno was found on the outskirts of the Clover Kingdom in the Forsaken Realm, where peasants are often discriminated against by the Noble Realm. Despite the prejudices against him, Yuno stands tall to become the greatest wizard in the kingdom, and his awakened power might just help him achieve that dream.
Yuno’s Early Upbringing
Yuno was first found at Hage church alongside Asta
Yuno Grinberryall was abandoned at a Church in the village of Hage by Ralph Niaflem’s father after the fall of House Grinberryall; he was found alongside Asta on the same day. At the time Yuno was found at the Church, he only had one possession, which was a magic stone turned into a necklace that he held dear to him.
As Yuno and Asta were found on the same day, they grew up together to become rivals and great friends who supported and challenged one another. However, Yuno was often foundsurpassing Asta in terms of magic abilities. This did not stop the two from supporting each other but instead drove them to work harder, especially when Yuno was gifted a Four-Leaf Clover Grimoire during the Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony. In contrast, Asta received a Five-Leaf Grimoire after the Ceremony.
The two boys had the same dream and goal:becoming the next Wizard Kingof the Clover Kingdom. Yuno took the Magic Knight exam to achieve this goal and joined the Golden Dawn Royal Knights, known for producing Wizard Kings.
Yuno Learns The Truth About His Heritage
Yuno Grinberryall is the prince of the Spade Kingdom
It was during the Elf Reincarnation Arc that Yuno learned of his heritage. During this Arc, Yuno is reincarnated as the human vessel for Licht and Tetia’s son. Throughout the series, it was well-known that Yuno had incredible magic abilities that could rival even the royals. It was during the Reincarnation Arc that Yuno’s true heritage is revealed, which explains his vast magic prowess.
During the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc, with his fight with Zenon, Yuno is blasted into theSpade Kingdom’s Grimoire Tower. Yuno awakens his grimoire from the Spade Kingdom when he thinks all hope is lost. It is in Chapter 309 that we learn of Yuno’s true heritage, the Royal family of the Spade Kingdom. The Grinberryall family has since passed down special types of magic for many generations. Yuno’s father, Loyce, has Sun Magic, and his mother, Ciel, has Moon Magic. As a result, Yuno, the heir to the Grinberryall bloodline, has Star Magic.
Yuno’s Overwhelming Magic Power
As royalty, Yuno is beloved by mana
Due to Yuno’s impressive bloodline and heritage, from being the reincarnated human vessel for Licht and Tetia’s son and his royal bloodline, Yuno is thus beloved by mana. As a result, Yuno now possesses two grimoires. Yuno’s first grimoire is the one he received during the Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony, which contains his Wind Magic and is a Four-Lead clover grimoire. He also now has the Spade Kingdom’s grimoire, which includes his own magic power, Star Magic.
Another impossible feat that Yuno has accomplished is his Spirit Magic, a rare form of magic in which the user can summon an elemental spirit and use its power as new spells are woven into their grimoire. While one can form contracts with these elemental beings, to be chosen by an elemental spirit is akin to receiving divine protection. It is also a way to prove the user’s strength; however, it is mainly royalty that is seen using this power.
Yuno is Reunited With His Mother
Previously believed to have passed away, Yuno’s mother, Ciel is found alive
As previously mentioned, Yuno was abandoned at the Orphanage Church in Hage village in the Clover Kingdom. While Yuno learned of hisheritage during the Reincarnation Arc, he did not act on it as theZogratis siblings were currently controlling the Spade Kingdom. Additionally, Yuno is faithful to his goal of surpassing Asta and becoming the next Wizard King.
However, after the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc, Nacht, the vice-captain of the Black Bulls, reveals that Yuno’s mother, Ciel Grinberryall, was still alive after all this time. This is likely to remain undetected by the Zogratis siblings as they continue to rule the Spade Kingdom. Upon their initial meeting, Yuno is shocked to see a nearly splitting image of himself in his mother in Chapter 331.
As aloof as Yuno may be, he does have memories of his mother before he was taken to Hage village. While their reunion may not be as tearful as many may think, during the Final Act of Black Clover, after a one-year and three-month time skip, she shows concern for her son as he enters the battle with Lucius Zogratis.
