Summary

OneStarfieldplayer has encountered a peculiar glitch that causes the whole of New Atlantis to fly through space. The bizarre sight resulting from the bug promptly made the rounds on social media, indicating thatStarfieldcould use some more patches.

That’s not to say that the galaxy-spanning RPG is particularly broken. On the contrary,Starfieldlargely delivered on the promise of being the least buggy Bethesda gameto date. However, when it comes to vast open-world titles with ambitious features like absolute object permanence that Bethesda is known for, some bugs are bound to slip through the cracks during development.

In one of the most incongruous examples of that phenomenon to date, Reddit user Punidue recently encountered the entire city of New Atlantis floating through outer space. And while the unusual sight might have simply amused them if that was all there was to it, the glitch soon proved to be much more problematic than it first appeared. Namely, the player reported that the city model kept following them wherever they went, even after landing on a planet, turning the game into “an unplayable mess.” Reloading a much earlier save fixed the issue, but requiredthe unluckyStarfieldplayerto sacrifice hours of progress.

Punidue claimed this happened in a vanilla version of the game, thus dismissing the possibility that the peculiar problem could have been caused by a buggy mod. Their account is substantiated by several other player reports detailing a similar issue, some of which emerged even before this image of a space-faring New Atlantis surfaced online. The bug itself isn’t necessarily tied to the capital of the United Colonies, as suggested by the fact that oneStarfieldplayer had an asteroid follow them around for 30 hoursearlier this month.

Apart from reloading an earlier save, past player reports indicated that starting a New Game Plus also resolves this issue, presumably by virtue of resetting the game’s world. However, that’s easier said than done if the affected player isn’t close to finishing the game’s main quest and has an object the size of New Atlantis on their heels.

One alternative way of dealing with this issue would be to open the in-game console, click on the bugged model, type “disable,” and press Enter. However, not only is that approach limited to PC, but it’s also a band-aid solution because the disable command will simply make a given object invisible. That could still leave the player with performance issues when it comes to the game loading an excess model the size of New Atlantis, not to mention that console commands will also disableStarfieldachievements. Granted, the latter drawback is easy enough to circumvent with mods that re-enable achievements, of which several currently exist.

Starfieldis available now on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
