The shamisen, which resembles the guitar but is somewhat smaller, is a three-stringed instrument. Matsugorou Sawamura, Setsu’s grandfather, is renowned as a shamisen master. He advised his grandson to give up playing the instrument on his deathbed if he was merely going to imitate other people’s playing and not develop his own style.

After hearing his grandfather’s last words, Setsu travels to Tokyo in the hopes of finding his own unique style of playing. But, the noise of Tokyo’s metropolitan life swiftly drowns out any other sounds. Setsu’s mother eventually locates him and enrolls him against his will at Umezono Academy, where, by a stroke of luck, he discovers a way to keep playing the shamisen. Setsu is finally ready to take life as it comes and find his own distinctive playing style.
