The latest entry in theBattlefieldfranchise,Battlefield 2042, has launched to a mixed reception from players. While some players appear to be having fun with the game’s spectacular set pieces, it has received criticism for technical issues. Several players recently got together to discuss issues they’ve noticed withBattlefield 2042’s soldier voice lines.

Some players have taken videos ofBattlefield 2042gameplay that looks right out of a Michael Bay movie, but others have shared videos highlighting the game’s questionable dialogue lines. Many of these lines play after a match as part of a cutscene and are unskippable, even if errors arise. The result appears to puncture the tension and excitement after a victory.

Reddit user stormalong128 kicked the discussion off by observing that some ofBattlefield 2042’s hardened soldierssound unnecessarily cheerful and even childish, making their quips feel out of place in the game’s high octane action atmosphere. Several replies agree that the contrast between the game’s intense and often grim narration and the cheery one-liners is distracting and unintuitive. A number of users agreed that this especially applied to quip cutscenes that play after a particularly destructive match, while one user joked that the only destruction they’d seen was the destruction of DICE’s reputation.

On top of many fans finding the voice lines unfitting,Battlefield 2042also occasionally plays the wrong voice lines for a given character. Redditor ugaaa1 captured several seemingly incorrect voice lines playing back to back in the same video. The fact that the soldiers' mouths don’t always move during quip cutscenes could be overlooked, but fans may have a harder time accepting feminine voices coming out of very masculine characters. This isn’t the only reasonBattlefield 2042is getting overwhelmingly negative user reviews, but it probably doesn’t help.

Several users theorized that the quips were added toBattlefield 2042so that they could be monetized in the future. The theory states that the game intends to implement a system similar toFortnitewhere players can purchase cosmeticslike emotes, dances, or voice lines.

WhileBattlefield 2042is unlikely to add dances to its repertoire, the idea that the developers plan to add more quips for players to buy may hold water. However, it remains to be seen whether or not players will be willing to purchase more quips when the existing array of quips have so many issues already.

Battlefield 2042is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
